Q&A with Oscar-winning Film Director Daniel Scheinert
Mountain Valley Arts Council will host Daniel Scheinert on Thursday, July 24th from 6 – 7:30 PM for a Questions & Answers (Q&A) Art Talk at the MVAC Gallery at 440 Gunter Avenue in Guntersville.
Daniel is half of the “Daniels,” co-directors whose film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” which was released in 2022 and won seven of eleven Oscar nominations at the 2023 Academy Awards. Oscars were awarded for Best Screenplay, Best Directors, Best Picture, Best Editing – Paul Rogers, also an Alabama native, Best Actress – Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actress – Jamie Lee Curtis, and Best Actor – Ke Huy Quan.
Photo ops with Daniel’s Oscar for Best Director and the official EEAAO poster will be available at the Q&A. Daniel took his mother, Becky, as his date to the Academy Awards.
Daniel grew up in Birmingham where he graduated from the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School and was very active in Shades Valley Theatre. He interned with WorkPlay and participated in Sidewalk Film Festival film competitions and weekend film scrambles. However, he frequently visited Guntersville to visit his grandparents, the late Charlie and Edith Hallman. Daniel’s parents, Ken and Becky Scheinert, moved back to Guntersville in 2008 and have been active as a lawyer and as a volunteer at MVAC, respectively.
Daniel and Dan Kwan, the other half of the “Daniels” graduated from Emerson College in Boston and relocated to Los Angeles where they started their careers creating music videos and a few commercials. In college, they ran film camps for kids as Harvard University which became an ongoing project called “OMG! Cameras Everywhere!” in various cities.
Their music videos for “Simple Math” by Manchester Orchestra and “Turn Down for What?” by DJ Snake and Lil John were nominated for Grammys. The “Simple Math” music video was shot in various locations in Guntersville and Warrenton. Daniels created other videos for bands such as The Shins, Tenacious D, Foster the People, and Passion Pit.
Other feature films include “Death of Dick Long” (2020) which was filmed in the Bessemer, AL area and “Swiss Army Man” (2016) featuring Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliff.

Mountain Valley Arts Council will host Quilting Art by Tiavalya Befecadu during July and August at the gallery at 440 Gunter Avenue, Guntersville. Everyone - quilter or quilt fan - is invited to come to the Artists Reception on Tuesday, July 8th, from 5:30 – 7:00 PM. Refreshments will be provided.
Tiavalya is local to the Northern Alabama area, where she began her career as a Congressional staffer. After transferring to Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, she worked as a legislative aide and scheduler for Members of Congress. Following her tenure of government service, Tiavalya worked in the electric utility industry before returning to her hometown to pursue her artistic interests.
In 2017, she founded Tiavalya Photography, LLC, which is a minority, woman-owned small business specializing in family portraiture, corporate headshots, and executive branding. In 2020, Tiavalya expanded her creative portfolio to include custom textile art quilting created from photographs.
Tiavalya is an award-winning, self-taught artist whose work has been exhibited in local and national museums. She has also been featured on NBC and CBS affiliate television networks, radio stations, Tiavalya teaches her textile art and quilting techniques to children, beginner quilters and craft enthusiasts. She is a proud member of the Professional Photographers of America, Modern Quilt Guild and sits on the Board of Directors for the Historic Huntsville Foundation.
